Make Up Academy: Brilliant Budget Cosmetics

When e.l.f. first came onto the beauty scene, people were skeptical—how could a dollar lipstick or check color be good quality? The company has since grown, expanded internationally, and still has its essential range, but has branched out to more expensive, yet affordable products. Other companies have followed their lead, and MUA (they are expanding internationally) is the latest one, that is slowly developing. Lipsticks start at £1 each, with value palettes and brush sets available, which are great for those who are just starting out, or as gifts. The Luxe range is their premium collection, with the latest colors and trends, and is very affordable. The packaging is basic, yet is still stylish; I’m afraid you don’t get the click factor with budget items, but it’s what’s inside that matters. I tried a few items and here is my verdict:100_1879

  • The stick concealer (Hide & Conceal) available in Fair, Natural, and Almond is excellent value at £1. The coverage is light, even, and is easy to apply, and blends well. It lasted all day and didn’t go patchy and I used it alone without any powder.
  • The other item of note is the powder blusher is priced at a £1. The packaging is a little fiddly and basic (especially if you have long nails), but the quality of the product is excellent. I used the shade Cupcake (a neutral browny pick) and I didn’t need to retouch. This gets a 4/5 for the quality and value of the product.
  • I tried both a satin and matte lipstick, and both provided color, but not much staying power, so these maybe better for touch ups. The satin lipstick felt too greasy, and the matte fared a little better, but does require a couple of applications

Currently the products are only available in Superdrug in the UK and via mail order to most countries. This is a company to watch, as the products are good value for money, and also have an excellent range of colors to suit all ages. In line with EU regulations the company doesn’t test on animals and is cruelty free. MUA is another company that shows that budget doesn’t always mean poor quality. I’m looking forward to seeing what other products they bring out.
